Should You Wear a Wedding Veil? What to Know
Wedding veils have been around for decades, and it’s undeniably one of the most distinct symbols of the bride’s ensemble.
While the tradition of wearing a veil has continued, wearing one is certainly not expected, and in this modern-day age, it’s normal to see brides not wearing a veil on their big day.
If you’re curious about the veil, there isn’t a “one-style-fits-all” solution. In fact, there are a few different ways to incorporate a veil into your wedding ensemble so it reflects your personal style. A veil can be what you want it to be, and we show you how in this post.
The 101 on the Veil Covering the Face
Some brides dig the covered face, while others don’t. The good news is, you totally do not need to cover your entire face.
One of the awesome things about wedding veils is that they can be made pretty much in any style you desire. They come in numerous fabrics, such as tulle, lace, and even floral appliques, giving you free rein to get creative.
For styles that don’t cover the face, there’s the option to gather the veil and sew it to a pretty comb, so the fabric frames the face and falls down the back.
The Mantilla style is a classic choice that also falls around the shoulders instead of covering the face.
For a contemporary twist (especially if you’re going for a BOHO look) consider a Juliette cap that covers the head and is pinned to the sides of the head, with the fabric flowing down the back.
What is a blusher?
Now if you would like the veil to cover your face as you walk down the aisle, there’s a cute little thing called a blusher.
This is typically a lightweight, sheer net that falls across the face. Once at the alter, it’s the father of the bride’s duty to lift it to reveal the bride’s face for the first time.
When is a blusher appropriate? Any time- it’s your wedding, babe! However, blushers are usually worn for formal ceremonies held at religious venues.
What is a birdcage veil?
This is a more sexy look if you don’t want a full veil covering your face. The birdcage veil consists of a thin piece of Russian net, which has larger holes than tulle. It covers the upper face, across the eyes, leaving the chin and mouth exposed. It’s very vintage and Old Hollywood glam.
